Parents cautioned to “trust, but verify” against on-line threats targetting children

Weighing up when to give your children online independence is one of the biggest dilemmas a modern parent can face. From stranger danger to cyberbullying, parents need to feel assured their kids will stay safe on the Internet. A new global survey from Kaspersky has found that when it comes to online security, some parents prefer to play safe than trust their child’s judgment.

Despite more than two-thirds (67%) of parents at least somewhat agreeing their children are fully aware of online risks, about half remain cautious by using various tools and practices to keep their kids safe when using the internet.

In the times when children aged between seven and 12 access many of the same digital services their parents use, such as video streaming websites or other digital facilities, there are many online threats and risks that could affect children’s attitudes towards the internet. Many parents are aware of this and are keen to communicate with their children about how to mitigate against any possible dangers.

There is evidence that some modern parents having open discussions about staying secure while surfing the internet are effective. Therefore, two-thirds (67%) of parents at least somewhat agree that their children are fully aware of online risks. However, in addition to these meaningful conversations, parents could be driven to take a more proactive approach to find out what their children have been up to online.

For instance, half (50%) manually check their children’s devices – such as reviewing browser search history – after they have been used. This could be down to their child previously hiding internet activity or disobeying parental advice. Some parents use the technique of ‘digital grounding’, where they ban their children from using devices if they have misbehaved. Half (52%) of parents also set time-limits for their children’s use of internet-connected devices.

More than a third (35%) have installed parental controls on their children’s devices in order to restrict or limit internet usage or view surfing details. Nearly a third (30%) of parents use built-in parental controls, like those found in video games consoles, to keep their children safe. Similarly, 30% also use the settings in family Wi-Fi routers to turn off internet access after a set period of time.

“ As almost every child now has access to an internet-connected device, there is a likely chance they will encounter inappropriate content or become affected by an online threat – such as grooming or identity theft. Our research shows that parents are understandably wary that family conversations and advice may not always be enough to ensure their chidren appreciate the potential risks of browsing the internet; many parents also use apps to control content and time spent on a device,” comments Marina Titova, Head of Consumer Product Marketing at Kaspersky.

“We encourage parents to put any assumptions they may have about their children’s online habits to one side, and have an open dialogue with their kids about the need to control their digital activities and internet security, as they may not intentionally stumble on harmful content,” added Titova.

To help parents protect children and the rest of the family from online threats, Kaspersky recommends:

Adopt automatic device blocking to help control the time that your child spends on their computer, smartphone, or tablet. It also stops children from spending all of their free time in front of a screen and you can set the amount of time that you consider to be acceptable

Social media is part of a child’s personal space, so monitoring their online behavior could be perceived as an invasion of privacy – this especially the case amongst older children. Simply ask to be involved so you can gain a better understanding of their interests and form a closer relationship

Children rarely like talking about their social media content with parents. The best thing to do is to discuss how they use it, without criticizing or pressurizing, and offering advice on how to take care when making new friends or connections

By subscribing to the Family edition of Kaspersky Security Cloud, parents can benefit from a range of features to keep the whole family secure online. The service includes Kaspersky Safe Kids – which is specifically designed to protect children’s internet usage and safeguard private data

GCash-beep™ launch digital QR ticketing for BGC Bus/ Topline Express Ferries transport

Fast, easy and secured! QR ticketing, which is better and safer than paying cash, will now be available for beep’s bus and ferry transportation. Here is how it works, better yet let us look how this changes the way public commuting is executed in Metro Manila.

AF Payments Inc., the company that modernized payment and ticketing in transportation through beep™, implements the first QR code transport ticketing system in the Philippines.

Metro Manila-based BGC Bus and Cebu-based Topline Express Ferries will now be shifting to using QR code technology for payment and passenger ticketing. A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information that can be read rapidly by a QR reader, thereby allowing quick passenger validation and entry into the paid or boarding areas.

“This is a new era in transport ticketing. It’s a smart solution where both operators and commuters enjoy the efficiency and ease of use associated with QR technology. We are grateful to our partners for supporting the initiative and hope to replicate the same elsewhere in the Philippines, “ said Joey Lim, Chairman of the Board of AF Payments Inc.

“We are proud to say that our technology is developed in the Philippines, by Filipinos, for Filipinos. To accelerate the growth of QR ticketing and payments in the country, we are opening our QR ticketing ecosystem to other market players. We invite transport operators, payments companies and developers to work with us in widening the reach of QR ticketing. For more information on how you can participate in this initiative, visit our beep business website at,” said Rene Almendras, President of AF Payments Inc.

AF Payments Inc is making the QR Ticketing Standard available on [] for interested parties to study the technology and to participate in its further development.

How QR ticketing works

In addition to using beep™ card and beep™-powered Topline Express Ferries cards, commuters now have the option to buy QR code based tickets that the commuter will scan before boarding the bus or ferry. The new system will replace manually validated paper ticketing to ensure quicker validation and a hassle-free commuter experience.

Additionally, AF Payments is bringing in the convenience of mobile payments. In partnership with GCash, passengers of BGC Bus & Topline Express Ferries can now pay their fare using the GCash mobile app.

How to Pay using GCash: At the ticket counter, open the GCash app on your smartphone. Choose Pay QR, generate your own QR code, and scan the QR code on the beep QR Reader. Your QR ticket will automatically print and the fare will be deducted from your GCash account.

“We are committed to improve the payment experience of BGC bus riders. Our partnership with AF Payments Inc and BGC Bus allows us to use our QR code to facilitate a convenient way of paying. GCash users can now pay for their BGC bus rides using the GCash App. We plan to replicate this model with other transport service providers. As we continue to find ways to enable a cashless ecosystem, we will always challenge ourselves to explore more ways to leverage on our technology to improve the experience of our customers. Because with GCash, what can’t you do.” said Anthony Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Mynt.
With 6.5 million beep™ cards in the market and over 20 million GCash accountholders nationwide, this initiative is expected to benefit a sizable portion of e-wallet customers in the Philippines. Passengers can now enjoy more options to pay and get tickets for their daily commute.

“The goal of BGC Bus is to make it easy and convenient for visitors, residents and workers in Bonifacio Global City to get around and navigate the area. We operate a systematic, efficient and affordable transportation system for the city and are constantly looking for ways to improve our service. We believe that QR ticketing and payments will improve not only the speed of boarding but also offer our riders more options for payment. We are happy to be the first bus company in Metro Manila to have this new system.” said Jun Galvez, General Manager of Bonifacio Transport Corporation.

“We are very excited to be the pioneer marine transportation partner in Cebu. Topline believes in enhancing the commute experience. Passenger safety and convenience are a priority to us, so this is a much needed development that will greatly benefit the riding public,” said Eugene Erik Lim, President/CEO of Topline Express Ferries

AF Payments Inc. is planning to roll out QR ticketing to other partner buses in Metro Manila in the coming months.

QR tickets are easy to use and reduce implementation and integration cost for public transport operators. The rich data conveyed through QR code tickets helps operators to accurately and timely record transactions. With its speed and ease of use, commuters also stand to benefit from this technology.

Philippines’ leading cashless system GCash launch #LetsSaveTogether campaign towards World Savings Day

According to the 2017 The Global Findex Database of the World Bank, a staggering 66 percent of Filipinos do not have a formal savings account. Leading mobile wallet GCash recently sparked an online discussion on this important issue, led by key influencers and brand ambassadors such as television host Robi Domingo admitting to their own stories of financial mistakes and not being able to save.
As a result, social media was abuzz in recent weeks with posts from netizens sharing their own financial woes with the #PlsSaveMe hashtag, illustrating how this reality hits close to home for Filipinos from various walks of life. The dialogue spanned the entire nation, with conversations and revelations in local dialects covering the different regions and provinces of the country.

“The campaign aims to help people come out in the open and be honest about their shortcomings with regard to handling finances well. Just as with any other problems in life, admitting that you need help is the first step to improvement,” said GCash assistant vice president for financial services Kim Seng.

The good news is that it’s never too late to get on the habit of saving, according to Seng. GCash is now encouraging Filipinos to start on the path of financial wellness with the #LetsSaveTogether movement. “We hope to be able to show Filipinos that it’s not too late to start on a journey to financial wellness, and that there are modern, digital innovations that will enable them to achieve their financial goals,” added Seng.

One such innovation is opening a digital savings account on the GCash platform. In partnership with digital-first Malaysian bank CIMB, the in-app digital savings account seeks to enhance financial inclusion and financial literacy for more Filipinos.

Gcash allows users to set aside money and earn up to 12 times higher than industry-prevailing interest rates, with no minimum deposit or maintaining balance required. In order to open a savings account, only one valid identification card is required to get fully verified on the GCash app.

“Our country is known as the top mobile and Internet users in the whole world. With this latest feature, we are taking advantage of this situation by bringing basic financial concepts such as saving on a digital platform in order to empower more Filipinos,” said GCash president and chief executive officer Anthony Thomas.

Just in time for the landmark World Savings Day on October 31, #LetsSaveTogether is GCash’s call to encourage Filipinos to achieve financial wellness through the basic financial concept of saving. “We encourage Filipinos to celebrate this worldwide event in their own way, by starting their savings journey on GCash toward becoming a nation of financially empowered digital citizens,” concluded Seng.
