Lighting up the Christmas spirit!

by Edsel Lorete/ http://inslashout.wordpress.com / http://inslashout.blog.com

What is Christmas without that lit up holiday tree! It builds memories of family, setting the mood of getting together, reminding Filipinos of the true meaning of Chrismas. The Ayala Alabang community, with its lawn set malls, launched another touching Christmas tree lighting celebration, marking the holiday season.

It is what draw people to take time more shopping, sharing precious moments with their families. But Ayala Alabang did something more this year, lighting not only a tree for shoppers, but also the mall ground’s surrounding trees, walk ways, turning everything into this winter wonderland experience.

Adding to that misty holiday feeling is Your Face Sounds Familiar judge Jed Madela, who did a series of Christmas songs for dining, passing through shoppers. What is great about Alabang, compared to shopping in BGC, Eastwood or Tri-Noma, is the homely ambience present in the air. It is more provincial in many sense, relieving a bit of the Metro stress triggered by traffic. It is like a Christmas park scene from that romantic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie “Sleepless in Seattle”.

Dinner outdoors was sumptuous, complimented by a buffet serving a variety of homecook seafood to meat viands cooked to holiday perfect for holiday sharing. Ayala Alabang mall’s lit up surrounding is perfect for shoppers with children, those wanting to relax outdoors, right after a long day shopping or while dining out!

Strides for real life

Philam Life, the country’s premier life insurance company, continues to make a determined effort to affect a paradigm shift regarding the general perception about insurance. The company has consistently emphasized that insurance is all about living life to the fullest, taking care of our health, and pursuing our goals with passion and enjoyment. It was with these principles in mind that Philam Life launched its Vitality program, which encourages Filipinos to embrace a healthier lifestyle while having fun.
As part of the Vitality program, Philam Life recently held The Music Run at the Philippine Arena in Sta. Maria Bulacan. Envisioned as the country’s biggest and boldest run of the year, the groundbreaking event took its Music Runners™ through five different Music Zones—Rock, Pop, Old School, Hip Hop, and Dance. The runners also enjoyed a complete suite of health and wellness activities and perks from Philam Life, such as financial needs analysis at the Real Life Planner booth, sports and fitness challenges at the Philam Vitality area, and financial health check and relaxation activities at the BPI-Philam station.

Present at The Music Run was Philam Life CEO Axel Bromley, who led close to 10,000 Music Runners along the 5km route.
“The driving factors behind Philam Vitality and The Music Run are actually very closely related,” Bromley explained. “Although being healthy is a top goal for many Filipinos, we tend to view living healthily as expensive and difficult to maintain. The goal behind both programs, Philam Vitality and The Music Run, is to provide a spark of enthusiasm by rewarding people for making healthy choices,” he further noted.

The Philam Life CEO likewise made reference to a recent study by the Oxford Health Alliance, which states that 60% of deaths worldwide are caused by chronic lifestyle diseases.

“In light of these sobering statistics, our company offers more than just insurance plans. We value wise and health-conscious decisions, and Philam Vitality promotes exactly that,” he enthused. “When healthy choices are combined with proper financial planning, that’s taking real-life strides in making sure that you and your family are secured,” he concluded.

The Music Run has had popular success in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany, and Taiwan. Given the continued success of the event, another Philippine installment may come in the near future.

Synchronised Endpoints Security for Sophos XG Firewall with Security Heartbeat

Sophos, a global leader in network and endpoint security, has introduced the first synchronised security protection against today’s sophisticated threats with the Sophos Security Heartbeat™ capability of the Sophos XG series of next-generation firewalls and UTMs.

This new technology directly links next-generation firewalls and UTMs with next-generation endpoint security to share threat intelligence that enables faster detection of threats, automatic isolation of infected devices, and more immediate and targeted response and resolution. With Security Heartbeat, organisations of any size can advance their defenses against increasingly coordinated and stealthy attacks and drive a dramatic reduction in the time and resources required to investigate and address security incidents.

The Security Heartbeat pulses continuous, real-time information about suspicious behaviour or malicious activity between endpoints and the network firewall or UTM. By giving these traditionally independent products the ability to directly share intelligence, the Security Heartbeat can instantly trigger a response to stop or help control a malware outbreak or data breach. The Sophos XG Firewall uses data provided by Sophos endpoint protection to isolate and restrict access to and from the affected device, and in parallel, the endpoint protection can remediate the attack.

IT organisations can benefit from advanced threat protection capabilities without requiring additional agents, layers of complex management tools, logging and analysis tools, or expense. The Security Heartbeat is fully enabled and included as part of the Sophos XG Firewall and Sophos Cloud-managed endpoint protection.

“Synchronised security from Sophos is a key innovation in next-generation security protection, and we are delivering that through Sophos Security Heartbeat™,” said Stuart Fisher, Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Sophos. “For years, endpoint security and network security operated in isolated silos and failed to deliver the same level of coordinated security defense needed against fast-moving, coordinated threats. Today, real-time information can be shared between endpoints and the network to provide an automated and immediate response to suspicious behaviour without any manual intervention. Synchronised security delivers better protection and manageability for organisations of any size, and this is particularly important to small and mid-sized businesses.”

How does the Security Heartbeat work?

· When a new Sophos protected endpoint is added to the network, its Security Heartbeat automatically connects to the local Sophos XG Firewall and the endpoint immediately starts sharing health status.

· If suspicious traffic is identified by the firewall, or malware is detected on the endpoint, security and threat information is instantly shared securely via the Security Heartbeat.

· The endpoint reports context-rich information such as the computer name, username and process information associated with the threat.

· The firewall can automatically take action to isolate the endpoint from any routed or remote networks and trigger additional action on the endpoint to mitigate risk and prevent data loss.

· After the threat has been removed, the endpoint uses the Security Heartbeat to communicate updated health status back to the network, which then re-establishes normal service to the endpoint.
New Features of Sophos XG Firewall:

Built on the foundation of Sophos’ market-leading UTM and next generation firewalls, the Sophos XG Firewall includes proven technology from Sophos and Cyberoam, and delivers the following new features:

· Network Security Control Centre. Innovative interface that delivers instant network and threat intelligence so users can take action fast.

· Unified Policy Model. Simplified policy management with pre-configured templates for business apps to dramatically streamline configuration.

· Sophos Firewall Manager. Full-featured centralised management of multiple firewalls that’s free for Sophos partners and managed service providers.

· Centralised cloud management. Sophos partners and MSPs can manage multiple Sophos XG Firewall installations from the cloud, using the new Sophos Cloud Firewall Manager.

· Series of appliances. A comprehensive range of appliances with options for every customer, including the new entry-level XG 85(w) and high-end XG 750 models.

· Hardware flexibility. The Sophos XG Firewall operating system will also run on existing Sophos SG appliances and Cyberoam NG appliances.

· Deployment flexibility. Customers can choose to deploy as hardware, software or virtual appliances, and every feature is available on every form factor.

Available models range from a desktop appliance with integrated Wi-Fi to rack-mount appliances for the data center. Pricing is available from authorised Sophos partners worldwide.

Family feud, political bickery trigger force back into chaos

Review:  Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Sci-Fi/ Action/ Drama)
Cast: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Max Von Sydow

Director: JJ Abrams

It is been 38-years since Star Wars: A New Hope phenomenally hit theaters worldwide. Goerge Lucas completed the saga after that with three more stellar Star Wars pre-quels, when it was digitally possible to render what his imagination dictated. It was a smashing experience, but fans wanted to see more of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Lea and the two droids C3Pio and R2D2, character predecessors of what started with Episode IV. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed this time by Star Trek’s JJ Abrams, finally bridges that long gap, detailing what became of Skywalker, Solo and Lea after the fall of the empire.

The Force Awakens, as the classic b-movie title would politely suggest, pans out a familiar storyline that is not far from where Episode lV too its form, where the new resistance under Lea’s command is poised to stop another evil entity boldly shadowing on Darth Vader’s deadly imperialistic intergalactic crusade. Skywalker has disappeared, but the lone Jedi, as the film engagely suggested, is relentlessly pursued by another evil empire, an entity lead by a mysterious masked villain with biological ties to force.

It is a feuding mystery extended to Skywalker, Solo and Lea – who is poised to maintain peace in the galaxy. It is hard detailing how that would transpire, but Star Wars fans would certainly understand where this panning plot discourse is taking time to build new Star Wars characters. You have to see film in full to know where that leads.

JJ Abram’s direction compliments what Lucas imprinted on the first Star Wars, the fan’s memory. Harrison Ford reprises Solo with much vigor despite his age showing, with exchanging witty dialogues fitting of Indiana Jone’s ego, more than Solo’s normally feuding punches on Luke’s deepening attachment to that Jedi religion. There is a lot in store for The Force Awakens, with new characters designed for integration, introducing young fans to Star Wars franchise.

It is a nostalgic process, particularly for elderly fans, but it is a character measurement that serves to play up on what everybody truly loves about Star Wars. Space fighter engagement, light saber duels (laced with comic dialogues) may not be that deep when Skywalker faced Darth Vader, lost his hand and then miserably fell off that glalactic pit in Empire Strikes Back (Episode 5), which is the best Star Wars chapter.

It is the same pattern Abrams took for The Force Awakens, introducing the movie with new characters blending openly with classic faces, opening Star Wars to sequels, which centers on the new rebellion Lea leads next year. Luke’s whereabouts will be significantly addressed, adding depth to the new Jedi female character, including what becomes of Solo.

It is a teasing character plot thrill that is fairly nostalgic, if not welcoming of a new fan generation already weaving its way into the force’s system. Star Wars has come a long way since Obi Wan Kenobi taught Anakin Skywalker, later Luke Skywalker to become the Jedi that would bring balance to the force. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is best watched on IMAX theater, but audience wanting to see it ahead, before the Christmas pinoy film festivals sets in, can see film in classic 2D form.
