From the time it was set up in the Philippines in year 2000 as one of the sales offices worldwide of Japan based Brother Group, Brother International (Philippines) Corporation has since then grown phenomenally.

Fulfilling social responsibility

 As the company grows bigger, it also makes sure that it gives back to the communities.

In the Philippines, Brother Philippines has been supporting reforestation efforts to revive the Marikina Watershed. Since 2010, Brother Philippines has also been conducting tree planting activities for the watershed while also donating farming equipment to the community.

For its other sociaI responsibility projects, the company has adopted a school under Brigada Eskwela and Lakbay Aral programs, has carried out livelihood projects with the Ati of Boracay, and has participated in the Philippine Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” for the benefit of breast cancer patients and survivors.

Moving forward

Then we realised we could do more. We can truly change the way people travel for the better, not just in our city, but throughout Southeast Asia.

We started new transportation services around the region with cars, bikes, deliveries and more. And our simple idea grew to something much bigger.

Smart Facebook virtual party!

Smart hosts ‘virtual party’ in country’s first Facebook Live video
 
Amidst the frenzy of revelers at the much celebrated Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo over the weekend, unrivaled mobile services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) broke new ground as it became the first brand to pilot Facebook Live in the Philippines.
 
The latest feature of the world’s biggest social networking site, Facebook Live allows users to broadcast live video content as a new way to engage followers. For a more shared experience, Facebook Live also allows viewers to post their comments and interact with each other in real time.
 
The feature was first introduced for use by US celebrities last August, and was then rolled out for verified accounts of public figures, news sites, brands and other users just last month.
 
Party at your fingertips
 
For its pilot Facebook Live video, Smart broadcasted a 20-minute segment of the Love Dance, one of the biggest electronic dance music celebrations at the Dinagyang Festival last Jan. 22
 
The live video came as a regular notification to the followers of Smart’s official account on Facebook. Upon clicking the notification, they were directed to the live video, which featured the rousing beats of Smart ambassadors and party staples DJ Ace Ramos and MC Pao.
 
Viewers from all over the county streamed in and posted their reactions – mostly in awe of the new feature and thrilled to be able to join the celebrations virtually on their mobile devices: “Ang sarap pumasok sa screen at maki-party (If only I could enter the screen and join the party)!,” commented user Jaylord Ambe. “This is amazing!,” user Jr Florentino chimed in.
 
The next day, Smart once again tapped Facebook Live to broadcast the set of Smart Ambassador Inno Naguit at the Dinagyang Invasion, another major electronic dance music celebration, eliciting positive responses from viewers who got to share the festival experience despite being miles away.
 
Each Facebook Live video was automatically published on Smart’s Facebook page, which was later viewed and shared by the thousands of followers.

Epson increase market presence in Cebu, joins festive Sinulog fair! 

 Digital imaging leader Epson Philippines displayed its heightened commitment to Cebu by joining the recent Sinulog festival. Epson’s unique float featured a giant Epson inktank system printer along with Epson Cebu employees and 2015 Ms. Cebu 2nd runner-up Aivy Mae Castro.

“Password sharing (among consumers) undermines on-line security” – Kaspersky Lab

Do you share your password? If that is common practice for your social networking, e-mail and banking, then you are in big trouble! You are putting yourself at risk from hackers, from thieves who would not think twice stealing any information that would link them to your financial accounts, your personal lives! “Nearly half (44%) of Internet users admit having shared their passwords with somebody or left them visible for people to see, according to the findings of Kaspersky Lab’s recent consumer surveys, one of which has 1,394 respondents from the Philippines.

This demonstrates a lack of cyber-savviness and could make it easy for cybercriminals to unlock and gain access into the online lives of consumers.

When asked about the importance of passwords, respondents were more likely to think strong passwords were necessary for the online services they valued most highly.

The studies found that according to consumers, the sites most in need of strong passwords were online banking (54%), email (44%) and social media sites (24%).

The list of the top three most important applications was almost identical, at 53% for online banking, 43% for email and 21% for social media sites.

Consumers also believe that online shopping and payment applications require strong passwords, but don’t place the same value on these sites.

Just 29% considered online shopping to be a personally important service, although over a third (38%) felt it warranted a strong password.

In addition, 29% agreed that online payment systems needed a strong password, with slightly fewer 23% regarding these services as personally valuable.

More worrying is the fact that although consumers agreed that online financial transactions require a strong password, over a quarter (29%) think there is no need to have additional protection for their personal credentials when using these services.

They expect the brands they shop with to provide all the protection they need.
Putting their personal information at even greater risk, a third (33%) of Internet users also admit to freely sharing passwords with family members.

44% have both shared passwords and left them visible to others. One in ten (11%) share passwords with friends and a surprising 6% with colleagues.

And, with over a third (38%) of consumers using only one email address for all of their needs, sharing that password with others could prove costly.

Should it get into the wrong hands, this password could unlock all information stored on that email address.

“Consumers need to be more cyber-savvy about passwords. Once shared, it is very difficult to know exactly where your password will end up. Our research shows that there is a real disconnect between the understanding of why we need strong passwords and the action people take to keep them safe. No one would expect a friend or family member to knowingly divulge a password, but by sharing passwords, consumers are increasing the risk of them falling into the wrong hands,” said David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab.

This could give cybercriminals easy access to personal and financial information and hacked accounts can be used to distribute malicious links and files, harming others. At worst, entire identities could be put at risk. Even the most complex password is weak if it’s visible to others, so keep it to yourself,” he added.

WD/IBM announce new patent acquisition, cross licensing agreements

Western Digital And IBM Announce PatWestern Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) today announced that it has acquired more than 100 patent assets from IBM (NYSE: IBM). The parties also entered into a patent cross-license agreement. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Patents acquired by Western Digital are in distributed storage, object storage, and emerging non-volatile memory. Western Digital expects the IP to further strengthen its technology leadership position and drive value creation for the company and its customers. The patents will augment Western Digital’s existing portfolio of more than 10,000 patents and patent applications.
