GCash-AlipayHK paves way for cheaper cross-border international remittance service for OFWs

by E. Lorete / http://inslashout.wordpress.com / http://inslashout.blog.com

Tired of scouring for remittance centers offering lowest transaction charges for OFWs? Those days are numbered with GCash formally partnering with Hong Kong payment servvies AlipayHK. Paving for a cheaper and secured money transfer option specifically for Overseas Fillipino Workers (OFW) in Hong Kong, partnership for a faster and secured real time money remitance transaction overseas to local recipients in the Philippines via their GCash powered mobile devices. “We are very excited to introduce this new remittance solution to our users in Hong Kong and in particular to the Filipino community in the city,” said Jennifer Tan, CEO of Alipay Payment Services (HK) Limited (APSHK). Tan said there are more than 200,000 residing (and working) Filipinos in Hong Kong, making 5% of city’s population. “GCash will make it easy for Filipinos to receive money overseas from their OFW relatives particularly in Hong Kong, where many Filipinos work as domestic helpers. It makes it easier to send (real time) fast money back to the Philippines, particularly in times when family needs support,” said Globe CEO Ernest Cu. GCash, which is Globe Telecom’s growing cashless payment and now remittance system technology, has over 24,000 GCash remittance outlets nationwide. But what makes this particular cross-border remittance unique is that its powered by Blockchain technology, which has started taking interest in the Philippines business sector. The same technology is what allows AlipayHK (with GCash) “to change and radically improve the speed and efficiencies for remittance services.” Service technology cuts through the sending money channels, keeping service fast and generally affordable compared to standard money sending transactions available for OFWs overseas. “Based on the smart contract, once a user submits a remitance application, all network participants including AlipayHK, GCash and Standard Chartered Bank, the first core partner working with initiative, are notified. The segmented procedires of the remittanc process can consequently take place in parallel, enabling the verification and execution of transaction to occur simultaneously.” A live remittance test between AlipayHK and Gcash took less than five seconds for recipient to receive money straight from Hong Kong. “What used to be a long process of going to a remittance booth, queuing in line for hours and filling out forms, is now easily and securely done over the mobile phone in just a few seconds,” reiterated Tan. For the first five months, and this is particularly helpful for OFWs with family’s to support, AlipayHK will not be charging transaction fees. “Remitted money from Hong Kong will be received in full and in peso currency. In case of transaction failure, full amount send will be returned to sender,” said Anthony Thomas, President and CEO of Mynt, operator of GCash. The Philippines, according to service partner Standard Chartered Bank, is the third largest remittance market with US$33 billion of registered inflows in 2017. AlipayHK has been exploring Blockchain technology since, while Globe Telecom’s GCash is committed to building a cashless ecosystem “to make financial services affordable and accessible” to every Filipino in the Philippines. GCash, if you are unfamiliar with cashless payment system, allows you to pay for shopping items like groceries, movie or concert and parking tickets, MRT fares and including paying for electricity and tax billings without cash. GCash, which comes with a physical ATM card for swipe transactions, includes mobile application for digital transactions that allow you to purchase or send registed or unregisted mobile loads to any Globe or Smart mobile devices. Overseas remittance coursed through AlipayHK adds momentum to GCash’s cashless payment options explanded to OFWs looking for cheaper means to send mo

NDAA 2018: Recognizing Filipino skills, artistry in the digital medium

by E. Lorete / http://inslashout.wordpress.com / http://inslashout.blog.com

Digital artistry, with increasing public interest in tech savvy digital technology, yields a new generation of artists taking their sense of modern arts into mainstreaming digital medium. The National Digital Artists Awards (NDAA) 2018, which has been providing apt recognition for skilled Filipinos artists in the digital medium for the past five years, was put up by Globaltronics to give due, formal recognition for artist in this growing field. “A lot of these digital talents from animators, artists, website developers and filmmakers work in advertising, in post production. Globaltronics believed it is a growing force that should be recognized for their contriibution to national development,” said Tobias Bernardo. NDAA 2018, for those interested to nominate talented individuals in their workforce, includes digital (short) filmmaking, Drone filmming, website development, and digital art. “Nomination, because of vast interest in this particular field, has now been opened to all ages with skill and capacity for digital arts.” NDAA 2018’s has adopted theme “Driven by Design, Fuelled by Passion”. ”It puts more emphasis on what drives these artists to stake their craft into from a working design idea to a fully functional billboard design or a five minuter anime based on say Filipino culture,” said Bernardo. Artists, in the post-production field, generally shy out of their comfort zones. “We want to change that, giving them recognition for major outputs that in some way have contributed or help in building and shaping public opinion in the Philippines.” With award giving body like the NDAA 2018, Bernardo said artists, backed by their work outputs, can find peer support with these recognitions. “Being an NDAA awardee has its perks. It can land you the best jobs among other applicants in your field.” NDAA is seeking greater public support for digital arts, which is becoming prominent with Filipinos who have moved on traditional production fileds heading mainstream social media. “It (Digital medium) is a huge market for potentially skilled Filipinos who have to contribute to this expanding industry everyone lean for pop entertianment, marketing, advertising and animation,” said Bernardo. NDAA 2018 believes recognition provies digital platform to engage market, make their talents known with potential markets with similar digital field interests. “It brings together digital artists from professional and inexperienced artists looking for exposure with a broader audience. It is all about creativity and inspiration.” Open to all digital artists, NDAA 2018 entries may be submitted to this e-mail ndaa@jumpdigital.asia.

Vivo X21 formally debuts first on-screen fingerprint scanner for mobile smartphones

by E. Lorete / http://inslshout.wordpress.com / http://inslashout.blog.com

Tired of reaching out your pointer finger to scan open your smartphone from the back or below screen with your thumb? It is a juggling act that has resulted in costly accidental phone drops. Those dreadful experiences comes to pass with Vivo’s extraordinary smartphone the Vivo X21. Sleek, black and definitely lighter on your hands, Vivo X21 stands out with its breaking screen scanning features that allows you to open or boot smartphone with your thumb print. I say thumbprint because it is the most widely used finger for thumb printing – just look at the last election where most ink thumbprints prevail. Well, you can do same drill digitally on-screen with the Vivo X21. The phone, when you look closely, does have this visible thumbprint point that appears subtly on screen when phone is on rest mode. I have seen one of these thumbprint screen design with Motorola Z, but for Vivo X21 it is a key for fingerprint scanning. While there is a slight feature lag compared to tradition physical scanner, X21 works smoothly against security breaches. It excrypted layering security formats detailed for mobile Android devices, and Vivo and even OPPO seem to be designing fairly seamless feature fingerprint scanning options with exceptional details with current Vivo V9 / V7 and OPPO F7. The X21 changes that affair with a prototype on-screen fingerprint scanner, and you can assign different fingers for this option. First time scanning is done on screen swiping, which I find more convenient enjoying a 6 inch full screen gaming or watching movies minus the silly main screen bottom control. Compared to the Vivo V9 or V7’s less than stellar 720P screens, the X21 emerges with a full High Definition screen. Worth noting, compared to V9, is X21’s sharp color improvement. Images are relatively more sharper, if not better than its competition the OPPO F7. This despite dual camera in rear combines only 12mp and 5mp lenses. Worth noticing is X21’s fast booting, lag free jumps between several activated applications. It is made possible with X21’s brand new and more powerfil 2.2GHZ Snapdragon 660 AIE Octa-core processor + 6GB RAM/ 128GB ROM. A processor this magnitude delivers high performance without draining battery on purpose. Shipped with typical round edges, X21 details with a full view 6.6 inch Full HD display. AI, which most smartphones take advantage for better camera imaging, details with dual pixel sensors lording both X21’s front and rear camera. It is a big boost from V9 camera setting, eliciting more brigter red, blue and green even more for 1080p full screen shot videos. It brings more those silky calendar texture for macro product shots. Images gets more enhanced with Vivo’s rendered improvements on AI supported HDR – basically giving more drama for selfies or even group shots adjusted to subject’s framing. Fancy photography details with funfilled Augmented Reallity (AR) stickers subtly animated to lighten mood. It is great for parties, selfies and group shot get benefit of AR stickers on whoever is on image. It is that fancy, but on first boot AR stickers needs to be downloaded first for actual camera access. Body is beautifully made of aluminum complemented by a silky all glass screen. Vivo did time extending X21’s scene stealing AI feature to improving gaming mode picture in picture for window accessing other items like e-mail or text messages without disrupting game. X21’s gaming keyboard improves with better screen control, offering better multitasking mobility like typing with spell check activated. It cuts through process of pausing game to go back to app for a quick reply. Screen notch stays with this particular Vivo model – and its is a permanent screen drill that is workable since X21 does have a bigger six incher screen display for your viewing convenience.

Top athletes share how one tech gear gets them to the top!

Triathletes lead a busy and demanding life. They balance strenuous training with personal responsibilities at school, work, or at home. They wake up before sunrise to practice for three different sports: cycling, running, and swimming. Their intense daily grind shapes them into physically strong and mentally resilient people.

The country’s seasoned athletes aren’t strangers to setbacks. They turn failure into fuel for growth and success, no matter how hard they fall. For them, any step taken to get back on track is important. Giving up is not an option.

Overcoming fear, one pedal at a time

Lauren Lim recounts a terrible accident that almost ended her career. “I was biking downhill when the chain suddenly dislodged from the wheel. I lost control, crashed into the bushes, and flew off my bike,” recalls the runner. “I lost my glasses and broke my helmet, handlebars, and phone screen. I sustained bruises, scratches, and swollen fingers.”

The young athlete admits that she was scared to ride again after the incident, but she was eager to overcome her fears. “My parents wanted me to stop racing, but I was determined to get back to fighting form,” she shares. “After my recovery, I pedalled for short distances every day, taking my time until I regained strength and confidence.”

The powerlifter-turned-triathlete treats this painful mishap as an important learning experience. “Mistakes and injuries are battle scars that you should be proud of. They shouldn’t hold you back; rather, they should challenge and motivate you to become better. Take consistent small steps to reach your objectives and surpass your limitations.”

Getting back to the game

When Alexandra Faith Garcia joined Binibining Pilipinas in 2016, she had to postpone training for almost six months. “I felt like a complete beginner when I got back to the sport. It was a difficult phase in my athletic career,” shares the Olongapo native. “At that time, I respected the limits of my body. I focused on slowly but constantly building my fitness routine back.”

Now that she’s back on the circuit, Alex takes on a different approach to practice. “I exercise even if I’m not preparing for a triathlon. I also adjust my expectations for a race, based on how much I train,” she says. “It’s important to build your physical foundation first before tackling bigger goals. Take your time and don’t push yourself too hard.”

Fall down seven, get up eight

“A good triathlete knows how to handle losses and let go of stressful things beyond one’s control,” says Nikko Huelgas. Every time this multi-awarded sportsman loses in an event, he makes up for it with a greater victory.

“A month after losing in the 2011 U23 World Triathlon Championships in Beijing, I placed 7th overall in the Asian Championships,” he shares. “When I lost in the 2015 Madrid European Cup, I used that as my motivation to snag the gold medal in the 2015 SEA Games Triathlon. I was the first Filipino to achieve that accolade.”

For Nikko, it takes more than physical strength to bounce back from failure. “As a triathlete, you need to be mentally and emotionally tough to succeed. Most of the time, you won’t do well in a race, and that’s okay. Just remind yourself that there are more opportunities in the future to make a huge comeback.”

Vivo + MegaPH Nationalistic Freedom Day Campaign

Young global smartphone brand Vivo, in partnership with Mega Magazine, celebrated the 120th Independence Day by encouraging the patriots to support their fellow Filipinos.  For the campaign’s fourth iteration, Mega teamed up with Vivo X21 to unlock The New PH. Mega Magazine, together with Vivo X21, on June 12 saw how The New PH campaign launched a positive message through a thousand personalities who uploaded their #UnlockTheNewPH headshots. The campaign stressed the importance of throwing one’s weight behind Filipino goods and talents as one of the many ways to show patriotism. “I encourage everyone to support Filipino-made products, experience the beautiful destinations of our country and be a part of its unique culture,” the caption that accompanied the headshots read as posted on Instagram with the #MEGAVivoX21Moments.
